Project of Technical Support on Learning Loss for Primary Education due to COVID-19 In cooperation with UNICEF and Discovery Education
The main idea of the project came as an urgent response to mitigate learning loss as schools reopened after COVID 19.
In April 2020, the Government of Egypt took restrictive measures to limit the spread COVID-19 outbreak after a surge in reported cases nationwide. Closure of schools and shifting to remote learning platforms including TV channels and online alternatives were among the key decisions taken by the Ministry of Education and Technical Education (MoETE) to ensure minimal disruption of learning Global evidence suggests that students affected by the shutdown of schools experience a significant reduction in learning levels or slower progress compared to a normal academic year.
Within the cooperation between Ain Shams University represented by Center of Excellence in Education at Faculty of Education and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to implement this project to assess the learning loss and provide a remedial program for students and teachers in public and community schools to recover the learning loss and putting students back on the right track, with a focus on students in marginalized areas.
The main aim of the project is to prepare and apply measuring tools to assess the level of learning loss on 6000 primary school students at public and community schools, design a training program to qualify 800 teachers at primary public and community schools, improve teachers’ capacity to be able to respond to these losses, and increase catch-up learning and progress to primary school students in order to develop adequate learning opportunities so every child is ready to learn in the following governorates: Giza – Al Qalyubia – Al Sharkia – Asyut – Damietta – Alexandria.
